Although this Ocean is characterized by HNLC (High Nutrient Low Chlorophyll) conditions, areas of high biomass do occur including the Kerguelen-Heard one. These bloom occurrences are attributed to natural fertilization due to micronutrient inputs from the Kerguelen archipelago and plateau, which is therefore an ideal laboratory to study the mechanisms of natural iron fertilization in the Ocean. Better defining these mechanisms was the main aim of the KErguelen Ocean and Plateau compared Study project (KEOPS). For this purpose, a good understanding of the parameters forcing the biological activity, the particle dynamics and advection processes in this area was required. Two cruises were realized onboard R\/V Marion-Dufresne (IPEV): <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff; text-decoration: underline;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.obs-vlfr.fr\/proof\/vt\/op\/ec\/keops\/keo.htm\">KEOPS 1<\/a><\/span><\/span> at the end of summer (19 January to 13 February 2005)\u00a0and centered on the plateau and <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff; text-decoration: underline;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.obs-vlfr.fr\/proof\/php\/keops2\/x_datalist_1.php?xxop=keops2&amp;xxcamp=keops2\">KEOPS 2<\/a><\/span><\/span> (10 October\u201320 November 2011)\u00a0at the beginning of spring and which track was extended to the fertilized plume in the wake of Kerguelen.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-fed7975 data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h6>During KEOPS 1, the mechanism of natural iron fertilization was\u00a0 demonstrated. Diapycnal mixing enhanced by internal wave activity is\u00a0 the mains mechanism that makes the &#8216;deep&#8217; iron of the plateau available for phytoplankton in surface waters. The large-scale circulation above and around the Kerguelen plateau results in a bloom region characterized by weak currents, leading to a water mass residence time of several months. This long residence time allows the bloom to develop and persist in response to natural iron fertilization throughout the entire season. The iron-enriched bloom region is dominated by microphytoplankton (mainly diatoms), which contribute 80\u201390% to the total primary production whereas the HNLC area is mainly dominated by small diatoms and nano-flagellates. The bloom area is an enhanced CO<sub> 2<\/sub> sink compared to the HNLC waters that are close to equilibrium with the atmosphere. However, the efficiency of the export, defined as the ratio of the particulate organic carbon (POC) to primary production, is variable above the plateau, but on average lower (28%) than in surrounding HNLC waters (58%). Observations from KEOPS 1 also evidenced a strong decoupling between the major elemental cycles (carbon, nitrogen and silicon) in the naturally fertilized region .<\/h6>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-d8ace8f elementor-widget elementor-widget-spacer\" data-id=\"d8ace8f\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"spacer.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-spacer\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-spacer-inner\"><\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-b986b38 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"b986b38\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-50 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-1a4de5f\" data-id=\"1a4de5f\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-5cf4040 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"5cf4040\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h6>During KEOPS 2 moored sediment trap measured a strong POC flux attenuation over the Kerguelen plateau compared to the open ocean. This \u00ab\u00a0High biomass Low export\u00a0\u00bb (HBLE) scenario may reflect the transfer of carbon biomass to higher and mobile trophic groups that fuel large mammal and bird populations rather than the classical remineralization controlled attenuation characterizing open-ocean environments. Diatom\u2018s resting spore account for more than 60% of the POC flux by escaping \u00ab\u00a0grazing\u00a0\u00bb pressure.\u00a0KEOPS 2 enabled the first seasonal estimate of the Si biogeochemical budget above the Kerguelen Plateau based on direct measurements. The seasonal cycle is characterized by a shift from a biogenic silica production regime based on the regeneration of H<sub>4<\/sub>SiO<sub>4<\/sub> during the early stages of bloom onset to a regime based on new production during the bloom development, which confirmed the decoupling of the Si and N cycles and explains the strong H<sub>4<\/sub>SiO<sub>4<\/sub> depletion of surface water by late summer.<\/h6>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-50 elementor-top-column elementor-element
